We started with 1 woman, $100.00 and her typewriter. She didn’t know what a fax was and didn’t know how to use a computer. She had a vision, a dream and knew how to persevere. Today, Global has approximately 400 Interpreters, a staff of 10, the same woman still owns it and is still the only owner and definitely knows how to use a computer, and we ensure effective communication for hundreds of people each week.
In 1996, April 15 of that year to be exact, Global was born as Sign Language Services of Michigan. We started as a company that only provided Sign Language Interpreters to the education field. After several college and K-12 contracts we grew and added some medical contracts and then some legal contracts. At first it was a home-based business, but in 2005 it opened it’s first brick and mortar office in St. Clair Shores on Harper and 13 Mile rd. After 6 years in St. Clair Shores SLS (Sign Language Services of Michigan) moved to Shelby Township, on Van Dyke and 21 Mile rd.
As the rules of certification changed for Sign Language Interpreters in Michigan it was decided that the focus of the business should move from education to medical and legal. Also, in 2013 the decision was made to move into the world of foreign language Interpreting. Without hesitation, SLS changed it’s name from Sign Language Services of Michigan to Global Interpreting Services and added Foreign Language Interpreter and Translation services.
This change in services has allowed Global Interpreting Services, formerly Sign Language Services of Michigan, to grow from a viable company that provided services across Michigan to a thriving company that provides services throughout Michigan and looking beyond.
